Bemidji Area Recreation

North Woods

Trees in our State Forests.

True adventures await in our great north woods – some historic, others natural, but all memorable. Minnesota’s first state park is here – Itasca State Park – where the infant Mississippi River trickles over time-worn pebbles. So is the nation’s oldest national forest – Chippewa National Forest– where eagles still soar high and free.  Lake Bemidji State Park features a bog walk.
The northwoods are home to porcupine, deer, chipmunks and mink. A colorful variety of squirrels, rabbit, and gophers are plentiful. Timber wolf, black bear and even the occasional moose can also be seen. In total, over 50 species of mammals and 200 types of birds are found within area forests.
Once a bustling logging town, the historic Buena Vista area is now a beautiful recreation center. Referred to as the "top of the world," Buena Vista is replete with rolling hills and lake vistas of the Continental Divide. The perfect site to enjoy downhill and cross-country skiing, along with snowboarding. Also available are sleigh rides, covered wagon rides, mountain biking and snowmobiling. The village features the Logger’s Museum on the early days of logging
The Paul Bunyan Recreational Corridor Trail is located between Bemidji and Brainerd, Minnesota.  It is a multi use recreational system, with summer use for biking,  roller blading, walkers and winter use for snowmobiling. Five miles of the trail are paved in the Bemidji area..
