Bemidji Area Recreation Areas

BirdingBiking and Canoeing, or Fishing, Snowmobiling and Skiing  - the Bemidji area has it all.  Whatever the season, our beautiful area surrounded by forests and lakes, offers you great recreation.
In the summer you can walk the shores of  Lake Bemidji, enjoy a local festival, golf, fish, canoe, hike, bike or just watch a beautiful  sunset over the water.
When the snow falls, ride miles and miles of Minnesota snowmobile trails, cross country ski, down hill ski, snowshoe or stay inside and swim at one of our motel's pools.  Take in an event at the Bemidji Curling Club, site to bonspiels and state and national curling competition.

The Bemidji area has many hunting choices.  The white-tailed deer is one of the most popular wildlife species.  The black bear is found in our northlands.  Ruffed grouse are a native woodland bird and our area provides public hunting land containing this species.  Puddle ducks common to the area are mallard, green-winged teal, blue-winged teal, cinnamon teal, pintail, gadwall, widgeon, shoveler, wood duck and blackduck.  Our area has an abundance of geese, especially the Canada goose.

Big Bog State Recreation Area
This two-part recreation area includes a northern unit and a southern unit. The 500-square-mile peat bog, the largest in the lower 48 states, is located in the northern unit. A mile-long boardwalk, completed in 2005, enables visitors to get a first-hand look at the unique plant and animal life of this rare resource. The bog, which has long been a source of medicinal plants for the Ojibwe Indians, represented a barrier to European settlers who tried in vain to drain it. Today, many of the native plants, including yellow-eyed grass, bog rush and two kinds of sundews, are on Minnesota's endangered or threatened species list. From orchids to carnivorous plants to rare birds, visitors will see a mixture of fascinating and rare resources.  The southern unit includes a sandy beach, picnic grounds and great fishing.

Chippewa National  Forest
The Chippewa National  Forest offers nine canoe routes.  The routes offer excellent opportunities to view bald eagles, loons and ospreys.  Walleye, northern and pan fishing is good along most of the routes.  Extreme caution should be used in crossing the large and unpredictable Winnibigoshish, Leech and Cass Lakes.

Birding Opportunities
Bemidji is located at the confluence of three major ecological biomes found in Minnesota.  Situated in the northern conifer forest region, a diverse group of birds make their home throughout each season of the year. The area offers a wide variety of habitats for bird species as well as scenic beauty.  Explore the abundant waterways and lush forests by foot, boat or auto.  Or take day excursions to surrounding areas of deciduous forest or native prairie regions.
With over 200 species of birds in the area, including the largest nesting population of Bald Eagles in continental United States, Bemidji's natural beauty provides endless hours of observation and enjoyment.
